Region

Roussillon

France

The Roussillon wine region is located in the southernmost part of France, nestled between the massive Pyreneese mountain range and the Mediterranean Sea. Its warm Mediterranean climate is slightly less noticeable thanks to the elevation of many of the vineyards due to the foothills of the neighbouring mountain range. This factor can be tasted through the elegance and finesse in the wines despite the hot southern temperatures of the region. Côtes Catalanes, Côtes du Roussillon-Villages and Collioure are the most qualitative appellations of the region for still reds made from Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Carignan, and whites made mostly from Roussanne, Rolle, Grenache Blanc and Maccabeu. In addition to still wines, the Roussillon is well known for its Vin Doux Naturel, a fortified wine. Banyuls, Maury, Rivelsaltes and Muscat de Rivelastes are the main appellations for this style.
