Domaine Jean Fournier

France, Marsannay-la-Côte

Although the vineyard dates back to the 17th century, Jean Fournier did not settle in Marsannay, in the Côte-de-Nuits, until 1962. Now, the 16-hectare estate is managed by the young and dynamic Laurent, Jean’s son, who makes wines with great integrity and a completely non-interventionist style. On these clay-limestone soils, pinot noir vines between 20 and 70 years old are converted to organic agriculture and certified Ecocert in 2008, and into biodynamic practices since 2016. Throughout the various parcels of Marsannay, this rigorous work allows the old pinot noir vines to contribute to the huge purity and finesse in the wines. Also unique to the estate is a plot of aligoté vines over 80 years old which give wines of great freshness and concentration. After harvesting and careful manual sorting, maceration is done in concrete vats and fermentation continues in barrels with indigenous yeasts for up to three weeks. The wines are then aged in old 500 and 600-liter casks for three years with natural filtration and fining. The result is precise wines with superb texture and depth.
