Champagne

France

The Champagne region is located on the Northeastern part of France, and is a true symbol of elegance, prestige and celebration. The region is world renown for producing its exquisite sparkling wines making use of the traditional method, where a second fermentation occurs in bottle in order to produce the very fine and persistent bubbles, a trademark of Champagne’s wines. The region’s cool continental climate and chalky soils are perfectly suited to grow Champagne’s classic grape varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. An interesting fact about the region is that it has two conflicting ideologies. On one hand, there are brands of Champagne. These prestigious wineries are high producing grape buying businesses that aim to create the same wine every year, in order to curate a desired taste profile. On the other hand, the region is also known for producing wines representing their “terroir”; wines effectively portraying a sense of place where the wine was produced. This notion of “terroir” is achieved mostly by utilizing the grapes of a single vineyard in order to truly showcase what a specific site brings to the wine through the “savoir-faire” of the winemaker. The region is further divided into sub-regions such as Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne Côte des Blancs and Côte de Bars. Each one has their own particularities, adding personality and character to the wines. Champagne also produces a still wine under the appellation Côteaux Champenois, and is made with the same dedication and precision, and offering a different experience. Finally, Champagne is a historic and fascinating region that embodies excellence and tradition through its wine.
