Region

Mendoza

Argentina

With nearly 150,000 hectares of vineyards planted, Mendoza is the most important wine region in Argentina, representing approximately 70% of the country’s production. The majority of vineyards are planted between 400 and 2000 meters above sea level, making some of them the highest vineyards in the world. Located to the east of the Andes, the climate is semi-desert with hot days and cool nights. A complex irrigation network with canals and reservoirs allows for the recovery of water from the Andes’ melting snow, ensuring the survival of viticulture. This region benefits from a beautiful array of soils that include clay-limestone as well as rocky, volcanic, and sandy elements. The emblematic grape variety of Argentina is Malbec, and the best wines of this variety come from the Mendoza Valley. The average age of the vines is 50 years, and they produce dark red wines, typically full-bodied, with aromas of black fruit, tobacco, licorice, and violet. In the mouth, the tannins are firm and elegant with balanced acidity. Argentine Malbec is good when young and matures gracefully with age. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Bonarda, and Chardonnay are the other main grape varieties cultivated in this region. The arrival of new generations of dynamic winemakers is revitalizing this region, redefining winemaking techniques, and ensuring its sustainability in this desert climate.
