Basile

Italy, Cinigiano

The brothers Domenico and Giovan Battista Basile acquired the estate in 1999 after it had been abandoned for over 30 years. It was a perfect fit for the two brothers who wanted to establish organic viticulture and build an establishment with no carbon footprint on the environment. The results were already visible in the 2004 vintage when the terroir clearly demonstrated its full potential. Even today, a lot of effort is still being put into the six-hectare vineyard to practice organic viticulture and optimize the quality potential of the grapes. No herbicides or synthetic products are tolerated on the estate and only organic matter is used as fertilizer. The Basile farm is located in the municipality of Cinigiano in the sub-region of Maremma in Tuscany. Its proximity to the Mediterranean Ocean ensures a temperate climate that rarely exceeds 30°C. The omnipresent winds allow for adequate ventilation of the vines which minimizes the risk of mold and disease. Located in the Montecucco appellation, the Basile vineyard has a very low clay content and is mainly composed of limestone from a friable rock called galestro. This composition allows for optimal drainage on the surface, but favours water retention at depth which allows the vine to develop a deep root system and to survive during hot and dry summers.
