Slovenia

Located in the westernmost part of Slovenia, the Primorska wine region stretches along the Adriatic Sea and extends northward to the Italian Friuli region. This region enjoys a temperate climate with hot and sunny summers and mild winters. Its proximity to the Adriatic Sea and the Alps ensures a temperature balance that favors white grape varieties, which constitute 75% of the production. The soil composition varies between red clay, limestone, and karst formations. Much of the vineyards are cultivated on hillsides and terraces, promoting long exposure to sunlight and good drainage. With its 8,000 hectares of vineyards, the region produces 30% of Slovenian wine. The main white grape varieties are Rebula (Ribolla Gialla), Malvazia, Sauvignon vert and blanc, and Chardonnay. Wines made from these grapes are fresh and fruity with citrus notes (lemon and grapefruit). Floral aromas and balanced, refreshing acidity are also present. Most of the white wines are light and are best enjoyed when young. In terms of red wines, Refosk is an ancient traditional grape variety that dates back to Roman times. Teran, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir complete the palette of red grape varieties. Depending on the winemaking style, some red wines are enjoyed in their youth for their fruitiness and suppleness, while others, characterized by tannins, will offer their full potential if allowed to age. Slovenia boasts 28,000 vineyards, and a new generation of winemakers is taking the lead, revitalizing the offer and emphasizing quality over quantity.
