Languedoc

France

Languedoc is an important wine growing region, with history dating back to ancient times. Joint with the Roussillon, its 246,000 Ha of vines make it France’s vastest wine growing region. Languedoc is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, the edge of the Rhône Valley to the east, the foothills of the Pyreneese mountain range to the west. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate that offers ample sun, cooling sea breezes and a multitude of varying soil types, which contribute to the creation of many microclimates, resulting in a great diversity of wine. Languedoc’s climate also contribute to the optimal growing conditions for a wide array of grape varieties. The red wines are typically full-bodied and powerful blends of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan. Appellations such as Corbières, Faugères, and St-Chinian offer richer and fuller-bodied expressions, while Pic-Saint-Loup and Terrasses du Larzac, located at higher elevations, provide a more elegant approach while maintaining the flavorful and robust profile of southern wines. The whites are expressive and vibrant examples utilizing varieties such as Grenache blanc, Vermentino/Rolle, Marsanne, Roussanne predominantly. In recent years, the region has witnessed a renaissance. Winemakers are switching their focus to organic and biodynamic viticulture, with a true emphasis on quality rather than quantity, thus aiding in sustainable viticulture and a conservation of natural resources. Languedoc’s wines are of great value, are approachable and are authentic.
