Domaine Benoit Chevallier

France, Vosne-Romanée

The story of the Chevallier family is typical of many winegrowing families. In the 1930s, the grandparents acquired land in Vosne-Romanée and became winegrowers, handing over to their son Maurice, who retired in 2008. Benoit, a computer engineer at the time, took over as a second winegrower with his sister Éloise. Together, they produced wine for 10 years on one hectare of vines. In 2018, the 90% leased family land reverted back to the family, and Benoit decided to concentrate fully on the winemaking business. The estate grew to 4 hectares, and Domaine Benoit Chevallier was born with the 2019 vintage. A certified organic estate, Benoit believes in the balance between natural agriculture and scientific approaches that require careful and sustained adjustment. Respect for the soil and vines means working the soil with living organic products, teas, composts and plant preparations that maintain the fauna and microorganisms essential to their good health. His aim is to intervene as little as possible, while remaining attentive. This attentive attitude is also reflected in the winemaking process, to enable the fruit of the vine and the accompanying work to be revealed. “I explore, study, experiment and question myself vintage after vintage, and I give my all every day to produce the best wines,” says Benoit, who seeks to fully imbue his wines with his personality.
