Burgundy

France

Mainly known for its vineyards of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, which make up the Côte d’Or, Burgundy is also composed of other sub-regions such as Chablis, Mâconnais, and Côte Chalonnaise, which are just as remarkable as their more renowned neighbors. The numerous vineyards that make up Burgundy are fragmented, and the same climate (vineyard plot) can be cultivated by several producers who share a few rows of vines. Here, more than anywhere else, the profession of winemaker takes on its full meaning, and the human factor becomes an important component in the production of exceptional wines. Burgundy, located in the central-eastern part of France, constitutes a narrow strip from north to south, stretching for approximately 200 kilometers and characterized by numerous local microclimates. The geographical, climatic, and geological conditions are ideal for growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gamay, and Aligoté, which are the main grape varieties of the region. Burgundy has nearly 100 controlled appellations, and the majority of them refer to specific municipalities, villages, or geographical areas.
