Il Marroneto

Italy, Montalcino

Trained as a lawyer, Giuseppe Mori founded IL Marroneto in 1974. His sons Alessandro and Andrea, also lawyers, immediately became involved in the vineyard, and after the creation of their first vintage in 1980, Alessandro became full-time winemaker. The estate is located on the northern slopes of the Montalcino hills near Siena in Tuscany. The estate comprises some 5.8 hectares of vines planted in three stages: 10% in 1975, 10% in 1977 and the remainder during the winter of 1982-1983. Alessandro adheres to a traditional, minimalist philosophy in both vineyard and cellar. To encourage the rooting of Sangiovese, which feeds on the surface, the north-facing vines are spaced 3.6 meters apart. Respect for plants is also expressed by the banning of chemical products such as herbicides and modern fertilizers. Production is not intensive, and this approach is clearly expressed in the wines made at the estate. Harvesting begins when the stems of the bunches take on a burnt color, a sign that the grapes have reached the desired maturity. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts and traditional barrel aging are the expression of Alessandro’s vision to create wines “strictly derived from nature. ” IL Marroneto produces 26,000 bottles a year of elegant wine, rich in aroma without becoming too concentrated. Wines for laying down, naturally!
