Alsace

France

Alsace is a captivating wine region in northern France, bordered by the Vosges mountain range to the west, and the Rhine river to the east. The cool continental climate of the region makes it nicely suited for making white wine, making up for 90% of the total production. Alsace boasts soil diversity and is known for producing wines of “terroir”, effectively reflecting the soil type and place where the wine was made. Riesling is the flagship grape grown in the region, but other grapes varieties such as Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Muscat and Pinot Blanc are widely planted as well. The wines are mostly dry in style, and vary from easy drinking and crisp, to more full-bodied and gastronomic expressions. Alsace also produces fantastic sparkling wines known as Crémant d’Alsace, and is produced using the traditional method, undergoing a second fermentation in bottle. Finally, Alsace’s wide variety of wine styles and gastronomy, influenced by German and French heritage, make it one of the world’s most interesting wine regions to discover.
