Quebec is gradually establishing itself as a fully-fledged northern wine region. Today, it is home to between 150 and 200 vineyards—about 100 of which are in commercial production—covering approximately 900 to 1,200 hectares of vineyards. The climate, characterized by harsh winters and a short growing season, has prompted producers to develop adapted viticulture practices, focusing on hardy hybrid grape varieties such as Frontenac, Marquette, Vidal, and Seyval, while a few estates are also experimenting with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Riesling thanks to winter protection techniques. This adaptation has given rise to a diverse range of wines: crisp whites, light reds, fresh rosés, a burgeoning sparkling wine sector, and, of course, ice wines, emblematic of Quebec’s climate. The main wine-producing regions—Montérégie, the Eastern Townships, the Lower Laurentians, Lanaudière, and Île d’Orléans—rely on estates that are often artisanal, rooted in their terroir, and closely tied to agritourism. Total production remains modest on an international scale, at around three million bottles per year representing nearly 1,000 wines, but it has been growing steadily since the 2000s. Quebec is thus building a unique wine identity, founded on innovation, adaptation to the northern climate, and strong local consumption, which contributes to its growing recognition.
